01 Introduction (research justification)
Research Topic: Economic Inequality
Chosen Area of Focus: The advantages and disadvantages of the financial gap between the rich and poor and how it impacts the society

Framing our research topic
Our chosen area of focus is The advantages and disadvantages of the financial gap between the rich and poor and how it impacts the society”. We have chosen this topic as we feel that the financial gap between the rich and poor is very big  and we want to find out why and how it impacts the society. In this society, the financial status represents your social status and how well you do in this society. And we cannot help but agree that sometimes we judge someone based on their financial status and automatically jump to conclusions whether someone is successful or not. Some studies have emphasized inequality as a growing social problem. While some inequality promotes investment, too much inequality creates destruction. There may also be some good points of economic inequality, such as providing opportunities for investment.

Possible factors related to economic inequality are equity, equality of outcome, equality of opportunity, and life expectancy. Research has shown that economic inequality is a social problem and that we should stop it. But other researches have also suggest that economic inequality is not all bad.

The people in this society judge people based on their financial status.  Hence, we will find out how the financial gap benefits the society and don't benefit the society.

Reasons for choice of topic
We have chosen this topic, as we want to find out how the economic inequality impacts society and find out whether it is a good thing or bad thing.
This allows us to fulfil the requirements of the project task as the project task looks at economic inequality from a good and bad point of view, which is also what we will be doing.
This topic benefits society as people will know how economic inequality is affecting them and how they should take precautions to prevent it.

Feasibility of the research
There is a need for our research, as many people do not know how economic inequality is affecting them, and economic inequality impacts everyone.
It is possible to carry out and complete the project, as there are many rich and poor students in the school that we can survey on and interview.
The proposed course of action is logical and realistic as it can be completed with the help of some students who would be willing to do a survey and with our hardwork and group effort.
The research provides sufficient opportunity for generation of ideas, as we will constantly have to think of ways to do certain things in the project. As for analysis and evaluation of ideas, we will certainly have many opportunities to analyse information and evaluate ideas on how to go about deciding what to do next.

Manageability of the research
The timeline for the different components of the project will be decided later based on the situation then. But overall, the project will be done as quickly and carefully as we can, trying our best not to go out of point and staying as close to the topic as possible.
This research provides sufficient opportunity for group work as we will need to discuss a lot of matters regarding the project, for example who will be assigned to do what component of the project and we will have to work together.
We do anticipate some difficulties along the way, such as poor communication among the group members and lack of data.

Accessibility of the information required
Information/knowledge that will be relevant to our research would be the amount of time people usually spend on social networking websites on average each day.
We will be obtaining this information from primary and secondary sources, depending on which one gives more reliable and useful information.
Some alternatives that we have thought of would be to ask others for information or where can we find the information that we need.

Some problems we anticipate while gathering my materials would be that the information that we can find is not entirely relevant to our project and that that is already the closest piece of information among all others that we have found.

02 Method
We created a survey which has questions related to a the rich poor gap in the school to get accurate results. This allows us to have a better understanding on what people think about this situation. The more answer we have, the more reliable our statements can be. After researching and finding out that the rich and poor gap can affect the treatment received by the person. We handed out the survey to few of the SST students and received many replies. According to the data collected, most people think that more attention should be given the poor and that favouritism should not be practiced. We used the help of internet, teachers' guidances and responses from students to gather all the data so that we can come to a conclusion.
The questions below are the one we used in the survey:

1. Have you ever wondered why there are poor people and rich people in the world?

2. Have you ever experienced unfairness when it comes to the rich - poor gap like for example more privileges given to the rich?

3. Do you think something should be done to prevent this rich and poor gap?

4. What are some of  reasons that you think causes the unfairness of the rich and poor?

5. How do you think everyone could play a part to help with this problem?

6. Without this problem, will the world be in peace?

7.Would you try to find a solution to help balance the number of rich and poor?

03 Results
Do you think something should be done to prevent this rich and poor gap?
90% of the answers were yes. A lot of people says yes for this question as it is major problem in this world so we have to solve this problem quickly or it will get out of hand.10% of the people said no as they think this problem is not very important problem in this world and this problem could be solved very fast.

The results:Screen Shot 2014-03-04 at 1.29.14 pm.png

Screen Shot 2014-04-10 at 8.14.10 PM.png

65% of the answers were that they thinks that the gap between the rich and poor is increasing and 35% of them thinks that the gap is narrowing. From this, we can conclude that most of them feels that this problem is happening and they know about it.

Screen Shot 2014-04-10 at 8.19.33 PM.png

41% of them answered that they have ever pondered about why there are poor and rich people in the world and 59% of them answered no. This shows that at least there are people who gives a thought about this question and they know about the problem.

Have you ever experienced unfairness when it comes to the rich - poor gap like for example more privileges given to the rich?

Most people have experienced it before as in Singapore, there is a drastic difference and change between the rich and the poor. We think that people have observed the unfairness than to actually experience it as there is not many people who come from extremely poor families from SST.

Why do you think this is happening?

People think that rich people are more resourceful than the poor and that the poor have less to give than the rich, thus people do not generally support the poor. Some people also think that there are some problems like lack of education and thus being unable to find a job.

Screen Shot 2014-04-10 at 8.22.29 PM.png

The reasons that the respondents think that causes the unfairness of the rich and poor were the rich doesn’t want to donate money to the poor, the cost of living is increasing drastically, the competition of survival in the world is increasing drastically and 13% thinks that there are other reasons. The most common reasons that the respondents gave was the cost of ling is increasing drastically (38%) .  By asking this questions, we can derive our solution to the research topic and also have a better understanding of what are the reasons that causes the unfairness of the rich and poor from the point of view from students.

How do you think everyone could play a part to help with this problem?

Most people think that we stop prioritising the rich and give more attention to the poor. They also think that we should give the poor a chance like letting the rich donate to the poor or helping the poor out financially.

04 Discussion
After researching and going through the data we collected. These are few questions we have to answer.

Discussion Paragraph Planning

1) Did the results prove/disprove the hypothesis?
2) Areas of improvement?
3) Application?
4) Further research?

During our discussion, we found out that our hypothesis was actually correct. The rich and poor gap is something that should be addressed and fixed. If left the same, it would continue to widen and cause an unbalance in the rich and poor gap.

We could have gathered datas from other countries and compared them with Singapore. The comparison will then tell us the difference in the rich and poor gap between Singapore and the other  countries and we can come to a conclusion.
Having done this research we can use this result to persuade Singapore to fix the gap and to address the problem.

Further research should be conducted as this report was based on survey done by a number students. If more students from both adults from Singapore and the research would have been more accurate and thus to the rest of Singapore.

05 Conclusion
The rich and poor gap affects the treatment each individual receives. To prevent this, attention should be given to the poor. Favoritism should not be practiced on both the rich and poor so as to maintain the balance between both in our society. This can be done by things like donation and equal treatment.
